Lesson 5 · Real-Life Mission

My DMV Day

Understand the questions, explain what you need, ask for help, and follow simple driving-test instructions.

🏢1 · Check in
say why you are there
🪪2 · Questions
documents + test
🚗3 · In the car
listen + react
⭐ Today’s superpower: you do not need every word. Understand the job of the question and keep communicating.
Timing: 0–2 min after check-in conversation. Keep this opener very short. Alice has just finished a group class, so the lesson is built for ~48–50 effective minutes with fast modality changes. No grammar lecture. Repair strategies should appear as behavior, not as a memorization list.
Voice check: Speaker 1 is saved in this browser and reused whenever available. Speaker 2 is fixed to Samantha (en-US) whenever that voice exists on the device.
Voice note: Albert (en-US) remains blocked.

What would you do here?

Say anything you already know. One sentence is enough.

🏢
You arrive at the driver license office.
I’m here to apply for my driver license.
🗓️
They ask about your appointment.
Yes, I do. / No, I don’t. / Do I need an appointment?
🪪
They ask for a document.
Sure. Here you go.
🚘
The examiner gives you an instruction.
Okay. / Got it. / Sorry, could you say that again?
Do not teach yet. Use this as diagnostic retrieval. If she knows a different natural phrase, accept it. Correct only if meaning is blocked. Ask one personalization question: “Which part of this situation makes you more nervous: the questions or the driving instructions?”
4–9 min · Survival Language

Flip it only after you try.

These are whole chunks. Try to say the idea first, then click to check.

🏢
Explain why you are there.
I’m here to apply for my driver license.
🗂️
Ask what you need to bring.
What documents do I need?
🗓️
Ask about an appointment.
Do I need an appointment?
➡️
Ask about the next step.
What happens next?
👂
You did not catch the question.
Sorry, I didn’t catch that.
Could you say that again?
🐢
The person is too fast.
Could you speak a little more slowly?
Second round = faster. Point to each card and give her 3 seconds. The goal is speed of retrieval, not perfect recitation. The last two chunks are deliberate recycling from healthcare, so briefly highlight: “Same tool, new situation.”
9–16 min · Listening 1

🎧 At the counter

First listen: Why is she there? Don’t read yet.

1 · Why is she there?

2 · What does the clerk ask to see?

Second listen · What did you hear?

Select the phrases you hear. Then check.

You should hear: apply for my driver license · appointment today · could you say that again · this is my first time.
Clerk: Good afternoon. How can I help you?
Alice: Hi. I’m here to apply for my driver license.
Clerk: Okay. Do you have an appointment today?
Alice: Yes, I do.
Clerk: Great. Can I see your identification and proof of address?
Alice: Sure. Here you go.
Clerk: Thank you. Have you taken the knowledge test before?
Alice: Sorry, could you say that again?
Clerk: Have you taken the knowledge test before?
Alice: No, I haven’t. This is my first time.
Clerk: No problem. First, we’ll check your documents. Then I’ll tell you where to go.
Alice: Great. Thank you.
Listening routine: 1) natural once, no text; 2) if gist is missed, replay slower; 3) natural again for chunks; 4) transcript last. Do not translate line by line. Ask her to repeat only 2 useful lines after comprehension.
16–22 min · Question Decoder

🎧 Hear it → react

The question is hidden. Listen first and answer in real time. If you need help, use a repair phrase.

1
Question hidden — listen first
Possible answer: I’m here to apply for my driver license.
2
Question hidden — listen first
Possible answer: Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
3
Question hidden — listen first
Possible answer: Sure. Here you go.
4
Question hidden — listen first
Possible answer: Yes, I do. / I’m not sure.
5
Question hidden — listen first
Possible answer: No, I haven’t. This is my first time.
6
Question hidden — listen first
Possible answer: Yes, I am.
Do not reveal too early. Start at Normal speed. Use Slow only when she genuinely needs support. If she uses a repair strategy on her own, treat that as success even before she answers. This directly trains the freeze point seen in previous classes.
22–27 min · Tiny Language Focus

Copy the helper.

You don’t need a grammar lecture. Listen to the first word of the question — it helps you build the short answer.

Do you have an appointment?
DO
Yes, I do.
No, I don’t.
Have you taken the test before?
HAVE
Yes, I have.
No, I haven’t.
Are you ready?
ARE
Yes, I am.
No, I’m not.

Fast match · answer immediately

Do you have your ID?
Have you taken this test before?
Are you ready to begin?
Do you have proof of address?
Hard stop: 5 minutes. This repairs a real error from the previous lesson (“Have you…?” → “No, I’m not”) without opening a full Present Perfect explanation. After the clicks, ask the four questions orally in random order.
27–34 min · Listening 2

🚗 Before & during the driving test

Listen for actions. What does the examiner want Alice to do?

🪞
🔒

Put the actions in the order you hear.

Examiner: Good morning. Before we start, please fasten your seat belt.
Alice: Okay.
Examiner: Great. Adjust your mirrors if you need to.
Alice: All set.
Examiner: When it’s safe, pull out and turn right.
Alice: Sorry, did you say turn right?
Examiner: Yes, turn right.
Alice: Got it.
Examiner: At the next intersection, turn left. Then change lanes when it’s safe.
Alice: Okay.
Examiner: Good. Now pull over to the side of the road and stop.
Alice: Here?
Examiner: Yes, right here.
Focus = comprehension of commands. Do not make her memorize every vehicle word. If “pull out / pull over / change lanes” are new, model with your hands or the map instead of long definitions. Replay the two lines that contain them.

39–47 min · Final Mission

Your DMV Day — no script.

One realistic situation. Three short stops. Use a repair phrase if you need one.

Teacher stays in character.
🪪 First time.
You are applying for your driver license. You have your documents. You have not taken the knowledge test before. You are a little nervous about fast English.
🏢 STOP 1 · Front desk
Your job:

Explain why you are there and answer 2 questions.

I’m here to apply for…
Do I need an appointment?
Sure. Here you go.
What happens next?
🗂️ STOP 2 · Test check-in
Your job:

Answer a Do / Have / Are question correctly. Ask for clarification once if needed.

Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t.
Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
Could you say that again?
🚗 STOP 3 · In the car
Your job:

Follow 3 instructions. Confirm one instruction you are not sure about.

Sorry, did you say turn right?
Could you speak a little more slowly?
Okay. / Got it. / All set.
1:15
Replay rule: first attempt = communication. Teacher gives only 2 upgrades. Then do the same situation one more time, faster.
This is the main task. Do not correct during attempt 1 unless communication breaks. Deliberately make one question slightly fast to create a genuine repair opportunity. Upgrades: max 1 listening/functional item + 1 language/pronunciation item. Then replay the same scenario so she feels the difference.
47–50 min · Exit

Before you leave the DMV…

Can you do these without looking back?

🏢
Explain your goal“I’m here to…”
👂
Repair a breakdownAsk for repetition or slower speech.
🚗
Follow an instructionTurn · change lanes · pull over.

⚡ 20-second challenge

Say one sentence for each:

1. Why are you at the DMV?
2. You didn’t catch the last part.
3. “Have you taken the test before?”
⭐ Real communication = understand enough → respond → ask for help → keep going.
Stop here. Do not add a long wrap-up. Note the 2–3 items that were still slow and recycle them in homework / next lesson. If time ran short, skip this screen before shortening the final mission.
